Microbes account for more than 90% of biomass in the ocean, produce ~50% of the oxygen on Earth, and play crucial roles in shaping ecosystems by mediating the biogeochemical cycling of elements such as carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, iron, phosphorus and sulfur.
LAB'S RESEARCH INTERESTS
Understanding the complex role that microorganisms play in biogeochemical cycling, with focus on describing the microbial community structure, functional capacity and rates of metabolic activity in the context of the physico-chemical environment.
